Understanding hair porosity to adapt your routine and reveal its true texture !

Do you actively follow hair care tips, but never get the results you expect ? Like hair that is too oily or dry ?

It's probably because these tips are not suited to your hair's porosity ! Shaeri gives you the keys to understanding your hair's porosity.

Do a hair porosity test

Porosity is the hair's ability to absorb nourishing and moisturizing care. It is a spectrum ranging from low to high porosity, which evolves over time and depending on chemical treatments on the hair.

You have probably heard of the glass of water test, which involves taking a strand of hair and putting it in a glass of water. This is supposed to indicate your porosity depending on whether the strand sinks to the bottom of the glass or floats on the surface. However, this is influenced by products used on your hair, its life cycle, colorings, etc.

So forget this test and observe your hair when you get out of the shower. Are your wet hair smooth, wavy, or curly ?

This will give you a clue, but here are some questions to help you recognize your porosity :

Do your hair :

  • Remain very oily after an oil bath despite shampoos ?
  • Like purifying shampoos and light conditioners ?
  • Quickly become sticky due to care products ?

If you answer yes to these questions, you have low hair porosity !

Do your hair prefer :

  • Oil baths, but in moderation?
  • Gentle shampoos?
  • Nourishing conditioners and masks?
  • Leave-in products and styling oils in small quantities?

If so, then you have medium porosity hair !

Finally, if your hair :

  • Absorb all treatments and want more
  • Like very rich and frequent oil baths
  • Prefer gentle and slightly nourishing shampoos or co-wash
  • Love very nourishing conditioners and masks as well as leave-in products and styling oils without moderation

Then you have high porosity hair !

What hair care routine to adopt for your hair porosity?

If you recognized yourself in low porosity hair :

  1. Use the shampoo of your choice and focus on the scalp (link to scalp care article).
  2. Apply a bit of conditioner and rinse after leaving it on.
  3. Let your hair air dry.

If your hair has medium porosity :

  1. Once a week, do an oil bath with our multi-use care oil or prickly pear seed oil.
  2. Wash your hair with the nourishing shampoo when you did the oil bath or opt for the co-wash other times.
  3. Apply and leave on the intense care mask, then rinse.
  4. Absorb excess water with a towel or cotton t-shirt and scrunch your hair. You can use a bit of care cream if needed.

Finally, if your hair has high porosity :

  1. Do an oil bath as often as necessary.
  2. Use the co-wash to wash your hair.
  3. Then apply and leave on the intense care mask.
  4. Generously apply the leave-in care cream after removing excess water from your hair, then scrunch your hair.
  5. You can finish with a few drops of the multi-use care oil or prickly pear seed oil.
