Odélia

Odélia, illustratrice

Odélia is a designer but not only...! We love "L'empire, le peuple et le royaume" and if you want to know more about it, it's on Ulule!

So tell me, who are you?

My name is Odélia, I am a designer. I studied political science in London, Rome and Paris and worked in NGOs in New York and Tel Aviv. Three years ago, I decided that I should be an artist, so I started working as an illustrator and learning drawing at night school. Otherwise, I have three little brothers and a little sister, I grew up in Besançon in a Jewish family. My four grandparents were born in Algeria. I do almost everything with my heart, it's tiring but effective.

Tell us about your project

We are 4 girls, and we are writing a comic book called "The empire, the people and the kingdom": Kenza, Ines and Saena write, I draw. Our graphic novel tells the story of the birth of the friendship between Ava, Leyla and Salomeh, on the evening of the attacks of November 13, 2015 in a closed-door meeting at Ava's grandfather's house. Three women, three pieces of immigration baggage, three identity trials - and three different hairstyles - to tell the story of France as we live it.

How was it born?

We knew each other because we were all studying at Sciencespo. During a Whatsapp conversation, Kenza, Inès and Saena had the idea to create characters that would tell the story of our French reality. They wanted to make a comic book out of it and came to me to draw. It was around the time of the 2015 attacks. Since then, we kept a blog, then the girls wrote the script with 6 hands and I started to draw. I'm launching my Ulule campaign, so that I can concentrate fully on the drawing... and in the meantime, the girls are making progress on a series script, among other surprises!

And your curly hair, where does it come from?

It comes from Algeria, from my father's family in particular. But also from me, because I'm convinced that hair changes its nature according to what you become.

And do you have a special relationship with them?

They have their independence... I can't control them, just take care of them, love them, and they do their life. Sometimes I watch them, and they teach me things about my mood.

So I'll ask you our usual questions:

Do you have a #Hairflop?

When I was 17 I cut it all off on a whim. It was pretty, but too assertive for the character I had at that age, I felt like I was losing my femininity. It took almost 7 years to grow back.

What about a #Hairtop?

In the summer, when I give them an almost daily bath in the Mediterranean Sea.

A #Hairtips?

I never cut my hair anymore, it falls out by itself when it's tired. I wash it once every 5 days, alternating between shampoo and conditioner, I apply a long mask each time, I detangle it by hand and with a comb. As a cream, I use a micro-noise mask that I don't rinse.
